Was Ideology the Driver Behind Nancy Guthrie's Alleged Abduction?

As the search for Nancy Guthrie continues into its second week, a global security expert who specializes in protecting individuals at home and abroad has suggested that ideology cannot be ruled out as a potential motive behind her kidnapping.

Scott Stewart of Torchstone Global, an organization that coordinates teams to protect executives and "high-value" individuals both at their homes and on business trips, emphasized the complexity of such crimes. He noted that kidnappings are rarely spontaneous events but rather the result of careful planning and preparation. According to Stewart, understanding the target is crucial, as it helps determine what kind of ransom might be sought.

Stewart highlighted that while ransom kidnappings are relatively rare in the U.S., there are dozens reported annually along the U.S.-Mexico border. These cases often involve Mexican-Americans or Americans with strong ties to Mexico. The ransom amounts typically range from $5,000 to $10,000, and many incidents go unreported to local authorities.

The secluded neighborhood where Nancy Guthrie resides could play a significant role in the investigation. The area features considerable space between properties, and homes are situated away from main roads. This layout may make it more challenging for surveillance cameras to capture vehicles involved in the crime. However, it also increases the likelihood that neighbors might have noticed any unusual activity in the days leading up to the incident.

For ransom criminals, confidence in remaining unnoticed before, during, and after an attack is essential. Stewart explained that they must conduct thorough surveillance to understand the victim's routine. This includes observing patterns of daily life, which can help them plan the timing and execution of the kidnapping.

Another possible motive for the abduction is ideology. Stewart pointed out that the victim's connection to a member of the news media in a politically charged environment makes this possibility difficult to ignore. However, he noted that ideological kidnappings usually involve some form of manifesto.

"In past cases, we've seen ideological kidnappings in Europe and Beirut, particularly involving the State Department," Stewart said. "If this case is ideological, the perpetrators will likely want to spread their message through a manifesto. It's unlikely to be driven by financial gain, and that scenario would be the worst-case for the victim."
