Santa Barbara Film Fest: Michael B. Jordan Credits Chadwick Boseman on 'Sinners' and 'Creed 4'

Michael B. Jordan Reflects on Chadwick Boseman’s Lasting Influence

During a tribute at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Michael B. Jordan shared heartfelt memories of his late costar and friend, Chadwick Boseman, who passed away in 2020 from colon cancer. Jordan, who was honored with the Outstanding Performer of the Year Award, spoke about how Boseman's presence continued to influence his work on Sinners, a film directed by Ryan Coogler.

Jordan described a moment during the early stages of filming when he struggled to switch between the two twins he portrayed. He recalled dropping his accent and speaking naturally for a brief moment before trying to return to character. During a break, Coogler asked him, “What would Chad do?” This question resonated deeply with Jordan, reminding him of Boseman’s guidance and pushing him to elevate his performance.

“I knew exactly what he meant,” Jordan said. “That propelled and pushed me, gave me another gear to go to. So yeah, Chadwick was with me. He's always with me.”

The event took place in the sold-out Arlington Theatre, where Jordan received a standing ovation upon returning to the stage. The actor, who turned 39 on February 9, reflected on his journey from childhood modeling to becoming a leading figure in Hollywood. He credited Andre Royo, who played "Bubbles" on The Wire, for helping him fall in love with acting and inspiring him to chase that feeling.

Jordan moved to Los Angeles at 18 or 19, gradually breaking into the industry through ensemble roles, including his part in Chronicle (2012). His breakthrough came after meeting Coogler, who offered him the role in Fruitvale Station (2013), which launched his career as a solo lead. Shortly after meeting Coogler, the director pitched Creed to Jordan, which became a blockbuster in 2015.

The film franchise continued with Creed II (2018), directed by Steven Caple Jr., and Creed III (2023), which Jordan directed himself. He choreographed the fight scenes in the style of Japanese anime, showcasing his passion for the genre. When asked about future installments, Jordan confirmed, “There's definitely gonna be a Creed IV, for sure.”

Exploring Jordan’s Diverse Career

Throughout the event, Jordan discussed various projects, including Red Tails (2012), produced by George Lucas, and Just Mercy (2019), which he produced. However, the focus remained largely on Sinners, where Jordan played twins with distinct personalities. He described the challenges of portraying two characters with opposing traits, using separate journals to understand their motivations and performing “chakra work” to determine where each twin carried their pain.

Jordan also explained how he coordinated scenes with himself, directing his “twin-double” during rehearsals. He emphasized the complexity of acting opposite himself and the meticulous preparation required to bring both characters to life.

A Cultural Phenomenon

Jordan is currently transitioning from Sinners to directing and starring in a remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, set for release next year. He admitted he is still processing the film’s success, which grossed $369 million worldwide and earned a record-setting 16 Oscar nominations, including his first nomination.

Delroy Lindo, Jordan’s co-star in Sinners and a fellow first-time Oscar nominee, presented the award to Jordan. Lindo praised Jordan for his humility and power, calling it “awe-inspiring” to witness his growth as an artist navigating stardom.

As Jordan continues to make waves in Hollywood, his dedication to his craft and respect for his peers remain evident. His journey from modeling to leading roles has been marked by perseverance, creativity, and a deep connection to the people who have shaped his career.
